Sunny and Cool Weekend

Saturday morning was sunny, bright and cool in Tenby. I was up early and spent time in the gym for about an hour on the treadmill and the multipurpose weight machine. That worked up my appetite and hot coffee with sandwich was enough to satiate it. The agenda for the day as lined up by Sita and Fahrul was to make a trip to Aberystwyth, some two hours away along the coast of Southern Wales.

Off we went to Aberystwyth in the BMW, a 2003 318i auto-transmission model Fahrul bought for Sita to use. It is a beautiful car to drive and it was just nice and comfortable for us four adults and Najla.

The BMW and the VW Jetta

We took the country road, guided by GPS, passing through farmlands, small towns and villages along the way. Wales is quite hilly and we were driving through rolling hills and parts of the road passed by cliffs that drops to the sea. It was a beautiful sight. I wanted to take pictures but something was not right with my camera and I could not take good pictures with it. Perhaps it has outlived its usefulness, I wonder. Anyway, we continued our way and arrived at Aberystwyth just at about lunch time. There were people everywhere, mostly tourists and finding a parking space proved to be difficult, especially along the ‘esplanade’ overlooking the sea.

We found a parking lot in the town centre and it was just at the beginning of the street that was closed for the day to allow weekend street market to operate. Of course Ram would not miss browsing through here, and of course she bought something!! Somehow street vendors have some kind of magnetism heh heh! At one spot, a cross-road and a small square, which appeared to be the centre of the town, stood a clock tower with seats placed around the square. That was where I landed while Ram and Sita continued to browse at the stalls. Me? I was just sitting there, amongst the crowd of people who were resting just like me (mostly about my age or older!!) enjoying the cool atmosphere and watching the people go by. An ice-cream vendor was nearby and I was tempted to buy but I resisted and tested myself to see how long I can resist as each time someone pass by with ice cream cone in the hand my resistance appeared to melt with the ice cream. I resisted ok, heheh but not for long though.

When done at the square, we casually walked towards the esplanade overlooking the sea. Here too were stalls and shops including cafes and ice cream vendors. We walked along the esplanade admiring the scenery and watching the antics of people there, especially children. Some were even swimming in the water. Although it was sunny I bet the water was as cold as ice! We had late lunch of fish and chips, while sitting on one of the many benches provided along the esplanade. Again people were passing us by, many with cones of ice cream in their hands, happily licking away. How can we resist. So, ice cream it was as desert after lunch for us.

We later continued walking along the esplanade and admired the old buildings some of which were built in the 1800s. I think one of the buildings belong to the University of Aberystmyth. It looked like it was once a church and its surrounding grounds was once a cemetery that has now been turned into a park and garden. Why do I say so? All along the sides and the middle of the park were aligned memorial stones of whom and who died in what year, mostly in the 1800s, and each has short descriptions of the named personality. A children playground was also built at one end of the park and Najla refused to move on without trying the playground. She was there for almost an hour and I had the opportunity to nod off on one of the benches close by.

We headed home in the late evening arriving Tenby at about dinner time. It was a pleasant outing, especially with the good weather, and we are planning more outings to follow……..
